I enjoy getting to know my clients, and will happily answer 'quick questions' (99% of the time not charging for) as I would rather know about what was going on for a client, rather than have them 'in fear of always getting a bill'. I do believe in a fair price for a fair job - this is something I try to drum into my clients when I can see they are undercharging for their own work.
I will also take the time at an end of year meeting to teach a client how to read a profit and loss statement. I will also teach a client how to prepare their own GST returns/PayDay filing, as being able to do these two tasks are valuable business skills that help aid a client into seeing where their money is being spent. Support will always be given to a client who, for many reasons, decides not to prepare their own returns.
Deciding to be self-employed vs re-entering the accounting industry as employee gives me more work/life balance and less pressure to meet someone else's fees targets or chargeable hours. It is important to me to have flexible working hours during school terms while having school-aged children.
